Tournament Information Cyclists & Walkers

Walking and cycling are excellent ways to get around St. Simons Island. Bike paths line almost every street, and bike rentals are available at various places on the island.

Mike Morrison talked with some cyclists to The McGladrey Classic and included parts of these conversations in an article on jacksonville.com:

Lynn Love, co-chairwoman of the tournament’s hospitality committee, pedaled up just before noon on Saturday. The wife of tournament chairman Mark Love and the sister-in-law of tournament host Davis Love III, she had a practical reason for riding her bicycle. “I don’t have my parking pass this morning,” she said. “My nephew has it, so I just jumped on my bike. It’s very convenient for me, less than a 10-minute ride.”

John Strande and his son, 9-year-old Noah, rode up shortly after Love. They drove from their home on the north end of the island to the Winn-Dixie shopping center, and bicycled in from there. “We cheated a little,” Strande confessed. “We tried the buses, but this saves us probably 15 minutes, plus it’s a beautiful day and Noah loves to ride, don’t you, Noah?” “Yep.”

Many have decided to ride bicycles, but no one has anything bad to say about the shuttle buses.

Doug Whitaker, a tournament volunteer from Thomson, had taken the bus Wednesday through Friday, but pedaled in on Saturday. “I just wanted to get a little bit of exercise,” he said. “Honestly, the bus was fine. I just needed a change of pace.”
